Virgin Stone Gets Miraculous Response

25 Oct 2007

Kaikoura; it's known as the Whale Watching capital of the world, but soon it could be in the spotlight for a very different reason.

A pebble, with what's been described as an image of the Virgin Mary on it, is being auctioned on the website TradeMe, and so far bidding has reached a miraculous $26,900.

The pebble was found on the south Kaikoura coast and the town's mayor says they're now bracing themselves for a possible influx of pilgrims.

Kevin Heays says he's been watching events carefully.

"I always suspected the 'hand of god' had touched the town of Kaikoura and we would welcome with open arms any pilgrims, to our blessed part of New Zealand".

Kaikoura's rich marine life and fascinating whaling history already attracts more than a million visitors to the region every year and Mayor Heays says they're very well set up for tourists.

The 1cm 'virgin pebble' is owned by Christchurch woman Lisa-Marie Corlet, who says she's been astounded at the interest. Thousands of people have viewed the stone on the website and nearly 30 people have actually placed a bid.

35 year old Corlet, who is not religious, believes the pebble has brought her good luck.
