New card will benefit Maori tourism

05 Dec 2007

A new discount card just launched in New Zealand is set to benefit not just tourists, but also Maori tourism.

The Manaaki Card can be used as a national and international phone calling card, and as a discount card on Maori tourism products.

It is expected to inject more than a NZ$1 million dollars back into Maori tourism in New Zealand.

The Maori Tourism industry which launched the card, says users have access to more than $1200 worth of offers and discounts from Maori tourism operators nationwide.

Maori tourism commitment
Associate Tourism Minister Nanaia Mahuta described the initiative as a clear commitment by the New Zealand Government to Maori tourism.

''The growth of Maori tourism is crucial to the growth of New Zealand tourism. The Manaaki card is another step forward in promoting some of the best of Maori tourism and provides tourists with a link back to their homelands,'' Mahuta said.

The Manaaki card comes with an information sheet that maps more than 50 Qualmarked Maori tourism operators, Toi Iho licensed galleries and eateries all over New Zealand.

It can be bought from participating Maori Tourism operators, AA Travel outlets and other key tourism operators.

Te Waipounamu Maori Tourism organisation has developed the card with the support of Telstra Clear and AA Tourism. Other key organisations include Intercity and Qualmark.
