Exhibition puts Maori art in spotlight
07 Mar 2007
Maori Market will exhibit contemporary, world class art in Wellington from 27-29 April 2007.
Held at the Wellington TSB Bank Arena at Queens Wharf, Maori Market will showcase some of New Zealand’s most celebrated weavers, ta moko (Maori tattooists) and contemporary artists.
The exhibition will consist of paintings, weaving, jewellery, sculpture, and carvings. Displaying these taonga (treasures) will be the creators of the art work. Many of the artists blend traditional and modern techniques and materials to carry on ancient themes. The art reflects experiences, ideas and issues that are important to the artists.
Maori Market will include seminars, live performances, story-tellers and a fashion show, themed around symbolism and the linking of cultures. Weavers from Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread will demonstrate their art form. This successful exhibition has been seen by more than 90,000 people in America and New Zealand to date and resulted in collaboration between Native Indian and the Maori artists.
Guest speakers at the event include Lillian Pitt, the celebrated American ceramics and jewellery artist. Pitt will talk about her career as an indigenous artist and the importance of tribal identity to her art.
Toi Maori Aotearoa, Maori Arts New Zealand is the organiser of Maori Market, which supports artists to share expressions of themselves and their culture through their art works.
Maori Market will form part of the Maori Arts and Cultural Festival, which will launch in Wellington in April 2007.
