New Zealand to present at London wine fair
15 Apr 2007
Havelock North’s Te Mata Estate Winery has scored an international coup with selection as the flagship producer for a prestigious London Wine Fair.
The winery will open the London International Wine and Spirit Fair in May
with a presentation to the world's top wine writers and commentators.
This will be the first time a New Zealand winery has presented the opening event.
"It is a significant honour that confirms Te Mata Estate's status amongst the world’s leading wine producers," Te Mata executive chairman John Buck said. "We're proud New Zealanders are making waves at the absolute premium quality end of the market."
The winery's trademark Coleraine, a blend of cabernet and merlot, will be the centrepiece of a seminar in which John Buck and winemaker Peter Cowley will present tastings from 11 vintages of Coleraine spanning the 25 years it has been produced.
The catalyst for the Wine Fair invitation was a tasting of Coleraine at Te Mata Estate 18 months ago for a touring international group of masters of wine.
Also selected for the fair are 10 other Hawke's Bay cabernet merlot wines from
the 2004 vintage to showcase the region's red wines.
Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate is New Zealand's oldest winery. It is family- owned and produces exclusively from Hawke's Bay vineyards.
Frequently poured at New Zealand state functions, Te Mata's wine was served to the Queen at her official 80th birthday celebrations.
