New Zealand springs into action

26 Jul 2007

Come September 2007, the whole of New Zealand will be buzzing with action as the country’s finest food and wine festivals, art and culture events, and garden celebrations take place throughout the New Zealand Spring Festival.

Regions across New Zealand will come alive during the diverse range of events happening from September to November.

From September 8 - 30, the third annual Northland Kauri Festival is a celebration of all things kauri. From living forests to living history, the ancient kauri giants will be the backdrop for a number of events encompassing culture, conservation, history and heritage.

The visual highlight of the Spring Festival is the iconic World of WearableArts (WOW) show in Wellington, opening on 20 September. A blend of theatre, dance and art, this stunning display draws entrants from around the world.

Established in 1987, the two-hour World of WearableArts show 'takes art off the wall and onto the moving body' enabling works of art to perform onstage in the ultimate arts competition.

For those with a taste with all things art and music, the Spring Festival continues with the Nelson Arts Festival, Tauranga Arts Festival, Akaroa French Festival and ASB Jazzfest in Queenstown showcasing international art, music, dance and theatre.

As the spring temperatures rise, events around the country are dedicated to the blooming flower, including New Zealand’s premier garden event, Hunters Garden Marlborough.

The Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the spectacular floral displays and Gardens of National Significance. Visitors can also attend garden workshops and take part in the guided Kiwi Walk with the Department of Conservation on the northern slopes of Mt Taranaki.

As the largest garden show in Australasia, November’s Ellerslie International Flower Show, held in Auckland, is a draw card for New Zealand’s top garden designers and horticultural enthusiasts.

New Zealand’s cuisine and wine is internationally renowned, and there are a number of food and wine offerings during the Spring Festival. From the ultimate seafood experience at the Kaikoura Seafest on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island to Toast Martinborough, the sell-out wine celebration in Wairarapa; there is something to suit everyone’s taste buds and destination.

A number of world-class sporting events will take place throughout the Spring Festival, including World Netball Championships, the Kelt Capital Spring Racing Carnival, New Zealand Cup and Show Week and most uniquely, the Burt Munro Challenge - a tribute to the engineer and speed legend in New Zealand’s southernmost city, Invercargill.
