Taranaki festival to showcase top gardens
03 Aug 2007
The annual Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival will feature almost 50 private and public gardens.
Now in its 20th year, the festival will run from 26 October to 4 November 2007.
Included in this year’s line up are 16 gardens of National and Regional Significance, the highest concentration of such gardens anywhere in the country. These gardens are among the best in New Zealand and rank alongside some of the great gardens of the world.
The festival also includes a lineup of expert speakers including award-winning Chelsea Flower Show designer Xanthe White, who will share her experiences designing and installing the 100% Pure New Zealand garden commissioned in 2006 by Tourism New Zealand.
Other highlights of the festival include the Duncan and Davies Garden Party, a Spring Ball, workshops, guided walks and a wild landscape design installation by top French designers Bruno Marmiroli and Patrick Gentry.
Located on the west coast of the North Island, Taranaki has one of the most diverse ranges of garden environments in the world, from sub-tropical climates on the coastal areas to rainforest surrounding the mountain. The festival gardens reflect the diversity of climate and show a wide range of styles from space efficient urban chic of city gardens, to more traditional rural gardens covering up to 15 acres. Taranaki’s warm temperatures, good rainfall, and volcanic soils allow these local gardens and parks to flourish.
