Name change for a popular alpine trek

18 Sep 2007

New Zealand's most popular one day trek is being renamed.

The Tongariro Crossing is to be called the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - to truly reflect the trek's alpine terrain and challenging nature.

The name change comes following concerns about visitors who set out on the day long trek without being fully prepared.

The crossing - which climbs Mt Tongariro, a dormant volcano on the North Island's central plateau - is an eight hour trek covering 18km of sometimes steep and difficult terrain.

It is notorious for sudden and unannounced weather changes which leave many unprepared trekkers in strife.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) advises people wishing to complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing that they should be fit, healthy and well prepared for sudden changes in weather.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is part of New Zealand's Great Walks season which begins at the end of October.

For a full list of necessary items for the crossing as well as weather updates see DOC's website.
