Hollie Smith to perform in Paris
20 Sep 2007
Hollie Smith is the latest artist announced to perform inside New Zealand's giant rugby ball under the Eiffel tower during the Rugby World Cup.
2007 has been a big year for the Kiwi songstress. Her debut album Long Player went platinum and she signed a multi-album deal with Manhattan records - part of the legendary Blue Note Label Group - the label of big names such as Norah Jones and Miles Davis.
Critically acclaimed Long Player showcases Smith's rich and soulful vocals while paying homage to her soul, jazz, reggae & r'n'b influences.
Smiths rise to fame follows her chart topping 2006 single Bathe in the river. The soundtrack to a local movie, it was the first time her unique voice was exposed to a mainstream audience.
Blue Note claims 24 year old Smith is the best voice they've discovered since Norah Jones.
She will perform inside the inflatable venue during the Rugby World Cup, alongside Dave Dobbyn and Maori singer Hinewehi Mohi.
At 25m long by 17m high the giant ball is a remarkable engineering feat. The first of its kind, inside is a function centre stacked with multimedia equipment that will showcase New Zealand sights and sounds.
Branded with '100% Pure New Zealand', the ball will stand alongside the French icon for the duration of the tournament as part of a Tourism New Zealand initiative to promote the 2011 Rugby World Cup being held in New Zealand.
