Woolshed inspires 2007 WOW winners

24 Sep 2007

New Zealand's great sheep farming heritage has inspired the supreme winning entry in the 2007 Montana World of Wearable Art Awards.

First time entrants Paula Coulthard and Ursula Dixon, both from Auckland, have won the award for their creation "Rattle Your Dags".

Made from recycled wool bags, the design was motivated by the pairs' farming backgrounds. It also had a message for fashion victims, "Don’t be a sheep blindly following the flock."

Couthard and Dixon have won $10,000 plus an American Express $10,000 sponsored international travel prize and a Hoglund art glass trophy for their entry.

Record overseas entries
The 19th Montana WOW Awards this year attracted 33,000 people, and had a record 55 overseas entries from 11 countries.

More than 150 media including CBS Evening News from New York, Marie Claire, L'Officiel from India, and First TV from Germany attended the awards.

The other major award, the Nelson Runner Up to the Supreme Award, went to Mandi Kingsbury from Dubai for her creation 'Motion & Stillness'. Her prize was $4,000.
