Igloo accommodation opens on active volcano

26 Sep 2007

It's guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime - a night in an igloo on top of New Zealand's largest active volcano.

Mt Ruapehu's igloo 'megaplex' sits at 2290m on the Whakapapa side of Mt Ruapehu. It features three bedrooms, two dining rooms and plenty of storage. It is so well constructed not even the mountains latest eruption could affect it.

Mt Ruapehu marketing manager Mike Smith says, 'It is one of the most unique experiences you could ever have. Watching the sun set over the western horizon from the igloo Megaplex is amazing'.

The igloo took about two weeks to build and is expected to last well into October. It can sleep three couples or nine singles, plus the Mt Ruapehu guides.

Guests will enjoy a fully catered meal and some great company. To ensure warmth and comfort, -18˚C Marmot sleeping bags are used.

'Apart from such an awesome experience, one of the extra benefits is a first-tracks ski or snowboard to the base area on freshly groomed snow. The only other people on the snow are those staff setting up for the day,' Mike Smith said.
Next year the igloo megaplex is expected to open for the months of August and September.
