Kiwi bares New Zealand's nudist market to the world

A Marlborough woman wants Europe to know the naked truth: New Zealand is a great place to take your clothes off.
Wellington Naturist Club member, Kay Hannam was in the Netherlands recently to promote New Zealand as a nudist holiday destination.
Hannam, who runs Wai-natur, a nudists' retreat in Marlborough's Wairau Valley, was New Zealand's sole representative at Vakantiebeurs, a tourism and travel show in the Dutch city of Utrecht.
More than 140,000 people attended the six-day show in January 2008, with 1,500 exhibitors from 150 countries.
Her booth in the naturist pavilion - which had representatives from 14 countries including Greece, France and the Netherlands - aimed to gain the attention of Europe's growing naturist community.
Hannam said many naturist friends from Europe had been to New Zealand without realising the country offered facilities that catered for them. She says that Europe's naturists have traditionally travelled to United States and Canada for their holidays but they were now looking more widely afield and were impressed with what New Zealand had to offer.
Hannam said the show was a valuable experience for raising the flag and making contacts.
Marlborough Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Tim Leslie said Hannam's trip could have positive spinoffs for the region. ''Naturism seems to be a growing niche in the tourism sector. Anything that brings in foreign exchange must be good.''
