New luxury resort caters for carbon conscious
09 Jan 2008
Karapiro Wellness Resort is New Zealand’s first hotel to adopt a carbon offset programme designed at allowing guests to leave pampered but guilt-free.
Set to open in May 2008, the five star resort is located near Cambridge, on the shores of Lake Karapiro.
The resort contains a health facility dedicated to recuperation, rejuvenation and restoration through spa treatments, therapy and high quality Spinal Balance Holistic Healthcare treatments.
Guests at Karapiro are looked after with personalised programs and treatments that focus on individual needs and wellbeing.
The resort’s carbon offset programme is a joint initiative with Carbon Zero and the Mangatahe Trust. The programme, the first to be adopted by a New Zealand hotel, works by calculating guests’ carbon footprint when they settle their bill at the conclusion of their stay.
Guests are then invited, at their discretion, to make a donation of the same value to the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust. The trust has been established to lead a community project to restore the ecology of Maungatautari, a forested volcanic cone rising above the Waikato Basin near Cambridge.
The trust’s vision is to remove introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari and restore to the forest a healthy diversity of endangered flora and fauna such as the tuatara, kiwi and saddlebacks.
