New Sculpture Exhibition for Waiheke
16 Jan 2008
An annual sculpture exhibition opening on Auckland's Waiheke Island will feature the largest outdoor exhibition of kinetic sculpture ever held in New Zealand.
The inaugural Cable Bay Vineyards Annual Sculpture Exhibition will run from January 18 to February 17, 2008.
Called Fulcrum, the exhibition will feature 19 sculptures by Christchurch artist Phil Price, all set amongst the vineyard's grounds creating "a forest" of sculpture.
The sculptures will range in size from 10 small works, six medium works and three large pieces.
It has taken a crew of five people to weld, machine, sand, paint and pack to bring them together.
Price describes the sculptures as surreal, but with references to nature.
"You can labour over them in the workshop and do everything you need, but as soon as you take them outside and actually get some wind, they take on their own life and you have no control over them. That will be extraordinary."
The exhibition will travel to Melbourne later in 2008 and then around the world.
It will be available for public viewing seven days a week, from 11am to 7pm, except when Cable Bay is closed for private functions.
Waiheke Island is synonymous with natural beauty, vineyards and creativity. Just a 35 minute ferry ride from Auckland, the Island also has its own permanent sculpture park: the Connells Bay Centre for Sculpture.
The Fulcrum Exhibition at Cable Bay Vineyards is free to the public.
