Queenstown plays for world Monopoly place
24 Jan 2008
Queenstown is vying for a square on the first-ever worldwide Monopoly board.
Global games giant Hasbro is searching for the 22 greatest cities in the world to feature in the new Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition.
Queenstown is representing New Zealand among 68 finalists from some of the top travel destinations in the world, including San Francisco, Milan and Venice.
Hasbro Product Manager, Leigh Gibson says Queenstown was a clear choice for nomination as it is a place that all New Zealanders can be proud of with its adventurous outdoors attitude and clean, green image.
Securing a final place on the board is dependant on the number of votes a city receives on the Monopoly website between 23 January and 29 February 2008. The 20 cities that receive the most votes will be selected for the World Edition game board. Two spaces on the board will be reserved for cities through a wild card vote.
More than 750 million people have played Monopoly since it was first introduced nearly 75 years ago, making it the world’s most popular board game. The official Monopoly board has represented the most elite locations in individual cities.
The cities voted onto the final game board will be announced in August 2008 when the new Monopoly Here & Now: World Edition will be available for sale.
