Air New Zealand pilot in daring UK stunt
08 Oct 2008
An Air New Zealand pilot has taken the kiwi 'can-do' reputation to extremes by spending four hours dangling 20 metres above a busy London street.
Captain Peter Clulow, a B747 pilot was suspended high above the city of London’s heavy traffic to put the finishing touches to a billboard.
The daring stunt was part of Air New Zealand's 'Is it just a kiwi thing?' advertising campaign that's aimed at making the unique 'kiwi can-do' attitude famous throughout the world.
Hanging about
Amateur abseiler Captain Clulow didn't just hang around above London, he was armed with a paint pot and brush to work on the 20 metre high billboard and help spread the kiwi message.
He is the latest Air New Zealand employee to help with the company's advertising - the new campaign also features genuine cabin crew from the airline's London staff.
Kiwi attitude
Captain Clulow, who has been flying with Air New Zealand for more than 35 years, said he agreed to the daring London stunt because it was a bit of fun.
"It sounded like a good chance to rappel off a tall building and have a bit of fun in the process. My definition of the kiwi attitude is getting on with the job, whatever it takes. I guess our ability to do this has come from our ancestors and the way they had to get stuck in when they first arrived in New Zealand," he said.
Novel campaign
A 'cranial billboard' campaign in New Zealand has also involved members of the public who agreed to shave their heads and have an Air New Zealand message temporarily tattooed on them. The campaign was a novel way of advertising changes to remove queues at domestic check-in counters.
Tourism New Zealand's recently launched publicity campaign in the United Kingdom has also involved members of the public. 'What do you say UK' explores real live experiences with genuine tourists who recount personal encounters with people and places throughout New Zealand.
