Conchords dominate NZ music awards
09 Oct 2008
Flight of the Conchords, the Kiwi comedy duo made world famous by their HBO television series, have thrilled their home audience by taking four major prizes at the New Zealand Music Awards.
Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who are in New York filming their next series, were unable to attend the annual awards in Auckland but brought the house down when they won the breakthrough artist, best group, best album and the international achievement awards.
Outstanding achievements
The latest accolades were the last in a series of success for the Wellington pair who shot to fame with their self-titled HBO series in which they play marginally talented folk singers struggling to make it in New York.
Their show was shortlisted in the 'Outstanding Comedy Series' at the 2008 Emmy awards, and picked up a Grammy for best comedy album in February 2008. The soundtrack from the TV show also went to number three on the American billboard charts.
Reluctant winners
But the duo were reluctant winners in some categories of the NZ awards claiming they were hardly eligible.
In a filmed acceptance speech for the best group award Clement shook his head and said: "We’re barely even a group, there’s only two of us."
For the best album acceptance, McKenzie was on the phone to his mother. "Turn on your TV now, Mum."
Other winners
The other big winners at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards were Opshop, who won four awards, including single of the year, and rock veterans Shihad, who won best rock album.
The People's Choice category went to Christian group Parachute Band.
