Hayley Westenra named top classical performer

New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra has won the prestigious 'classical performer of the year' award at the Variety Club's annual show business awards in London.
The 21-year-old international star from Christchurch in New Zealand's South Island began singing at the age of six. She's had a meteoric rise to fame and has now sold more than three million records.
Famous company
Hayley received the Variety Club award from Elaine Paige at a glittering ceremony in Park Lane, London. The annual event raises money for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people.
Fellow award winners included Sir Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh.
New tour
Westenra recently returned to Britain after entertaining UK troops in Iraq.
Her next major tour is the 'Valentines' tour through the UK in February 2009 with Jonathan Ansell.
