Grammy win for NZ comedy duo

11 Feb 2008

New Zealand hit comedy duo Flight of the Conchords have won a prestigious Grammy Award.

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have picked up the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for their EP The Distant Future at the awards ceremony held in Los Angeles.

Conchords have been getting worldwide attention, signing for a second series on HBO, and they've recently picked up a string of awards and nominations, including being named Wellingtonians of the Year.

Both Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have been back home in New Zealand working on a full-length album that should be released at the end of April. The disc will feature reworked versions of tunes that they have performed on screen and in concert.

Flight of the Conchords ended its first season on the HBO cable network in September, and new episodes will air later this year.

The last New Zealander to win a Grammy was Fran Walshe in 2005. The partner of Kiwi Director Peter Jackson won the award for Best Song written for motion picture, television or other visual media. Into the West was written for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and sung by Eurythmics lead vocalist Annie Lennox.
