Backpacker to millionaire in one day

27 Feb 2008

There will be no more bunkrooms or buses for an Australian backpacker who won $1 million on his second day in New Zealand.

The man bought a lotto ticket in a 'spur of the moment' decision in Christchurch, the South Island's largest town.

Wishing to remain anonymous, the lucky tourist says he will no longer have to resort to fruit picking to extend his stay in New Zealand.

"We had planned to travel around New Zealand for a few months and I was going to go fruit picking to earn some money along the way. However, we will now be able to travel in a bit more style," he said.

The traveler watched the results come in live on television with his mates.

"My heart started racing and I had to get my friends to double check the numbers," he said,

"The first thing I did was ring my mum and share the good news with my family"

"It's just a dream come true"

The winner traveled to Lotto headquarters in Wellington to claim his prize.
