Art Deco Enthusiasts Celebrate 20 Years
18 Feb 2008
Thousands of art deco fans have turned out in the city of Napier for a week-long party celebrating 20 years of the Art Deco Festival.
More than 100 events, including deco bathing belles, a dress and hair competition, a street party and promenades have kept the visitors entertained.
Fine dining, a tin-plate Depression dinner, silver-service picnics on the lawn, dances, jazz, a soap-box derby, and steam train trips also featured in the city's annual festival.
Organiser Peter Mooney said the celebrations were becoming bigger each year.
"It's difficult to measure but we estimate we get 10,000-plus people from outside the region for the event."
This year's main point of interest has been the huge Queen Victoria cruise ship visiting Napier on its maiden voyage out of Southampton.
The 294-metre Cunard liner brought 2000 passengers and 1000 crew into Napier city .
