Music for mutts - New Zealand CD for dogs to go global
21 Feb 2008
A New Zealand CD only audible to dogs is set to get tails wagging around the world.
Recorded at a frequency that only dogs can hear, the charity CD was released in New Zealand for Christmas 2007. ‘A Very Silent Night’ was so popular with dog-owners that it reached No.1 on the New Zealand record charts.
Currently, distributors around the world are vying for the rights to international sales. Dogs in Australia and the United States could soon be howling along to the track.
The single was created by Auckland-based advertising agency DraftFCB Creative. The recording was electronically synthesized to achieve frequencies only audible to dogs. The CD contains both an instrumental and vocal version of the song.
Although dog owners sit through several minutes of silence while the disc plays, the dogs they own are reported to wag their tails, prick up their ears, and even dance in delight.
Proceeds from CD sales have been going to animal welfare group Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. SPCA Chief Executive Bob Kerridge says, ''why shouldn’t dogs have their own music collection?''
Around $22,000 has been raised by the disc’s sale so far.
