New Zealand's got talent too!

13 Mar 2008

Another young Kiwi ‘popera’ singer will prove New Zealand’s got talent too when she teams up with Britain’s legendary TV talent show discovery, Paul Potts, on his Australasian tour next month.

Elizabeth Marvelly, Rotorua’s 18 year old glamour girl who has shot to international stardom since being signed with EMI international, says she’s delighted to be touring with the now world famous Paul Potts.

It’s Potts’ second visit to New Zealand since the gap-toothed, ex-mobile phone sales man captured the hearts of millions when he won the Britain’s Got Talent TV show with a haunting rendition of Puccine’s Nessun Dorma. Having stunned show judges and moved the audience to tears, Potts went on to become a household name and is currently on a world wide tour to promote his latest album ‘One Chance’.

Marvelly will join Potts for concerts in Christchurch (April 6), Wellington (April 8) Rotorua (April 11) and Auckland (April 13) before going on to Australia where they will sing in Adelaide (April 16), Brisbane (April 18), the Sydney Opera House (April 20), Melbourne (April 21) and Perth (April 23). EMI have announced that they will release Marvelly’s debut album into Australia to coincide with the tour. The self titled album was released in New Zealand just before Christmas and hit gold within five days. After Australia the album will be launched into Asia, then Europe before going global.

A Marvelly-ous career
The Paul Potts tour is the latest in a string of exciting developments for Marvelly who is being hailed as New Zealand’s latest singing sensation. The teenager is one of only three New Zealanders to have international recording contracts with EMI Classics in the last ten years….the others being Jonathan Lemalu and Anna Leese. Marvelly was handpicked and moulded by Dame Malvina Major as well as veteran entertainers Sir Howard Morrison, who is a distant relative, and Gray Bartlett MBE who also discovered Hayley Westenra, Yulia Townsend, Ben Morrison and Will Martin.

''Elizabeth has the excitement and wide-range of talent to very quickly be a world star. Her abilities range from acting, drama, public speaking through to singing and stage. She is my greatest discovery yet,'' says Bartlett.

Marvelly completed her schooling last year with straight A grades in Cambridge University Entrance exams achieving an average of 93%. She was Head of House, Head of Culture, a school prefect, house prefect and Head of the Arts Committee at Auckland’s internationally renowned Kings College. As well as excelling in Speech and Drama, she also earned a reputation on the sports field. Add to this her stunning good looks and the 18 year old has everything to boast about but according to friends and family, Marvelly’s feet are firmly on the ground."

''During our family holiday at Mount Maunganui Elizabeth spent hours on the beach making sandcastles with a friend. She’s so down to earth and also incredibly dedicated. She has known from a very young age that she wanted to perform and now she’s living her dream,'' says her father Brett Marvelly.

Parents Brett and Vlasta Marvelly were innkeepers at Rotorua’s Princes Gate Hotel where Elizabeth was born into the life of performing. Having started playing the piano at the age of four and singing at eight, she performed with many of the musicians, entertainers and personalities who visited the hotel. When she turned 13 her father drove three hours to Auckland every Sunday to take Elizabeth to singing lessons. The dedication paid off and now just five years later national and international engagements are coming thick and fast.

Future Engagements
Marvelly’s summer calendar has included singing at the Hong Kong premiere of Nicole Kidman’s latest movie "The Golden Compass", Carols by Candlelight in Sydney, Auckland’s Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park and a special Matakana concert with Hayley Westenra. Her forthcoming engagements include:

March 15: Whakatane concert with Malvina Major
March 25: Guest appearance on ‘Dancing with the Stars’
March 29: Manukau City performance with Gray Bartlett
March 30: Tauranga - ‘Three Divas’ - with Yulia and a local artist

Marvelly will then head to London to record some new titles at the Abbey Road studios.
