New Zealand women pin hopes on cloth nappies

15 Apr 2008

The new-generation nappy is the way forward, according to a group of New Zealand women.

The seven women - all cloth nappy distributors, manufacturers and retailers - have formed the New Zealand Nappy Alliance (NZNA) to push the health and environmental benefits of cloth nappies.

Using cloth nappies saves room in landfills and also costs about a third less than using disposable nappies over a child's lifetime. According to research by NZNA, one New Zealand child would use at least 4,500 disposable nappies in their lifetime.

NZNA member, Kate Mead says it’s time to stand up and say no to endless landfills and the destruction of natural resources.

''In the end I think my generation is realising that at some point we've just got to take action, at some point we've just got to say 'stop' and find a better way.''

The group aims to dispel myths about cotton nappies. They say the new generation of cloth nappies are colourful, as easy to put on as disposables and made from fabrics such as soft cotton or bamboo.

The nappy alliance was announced ahead of global Nappy Week, which begins on 21 April 2008.
