New Zealand's Weta Workshop to open Cave for film fans

24 Apr 2008

Movie fans will soon be invited in for a glimpse into the world of Academy Award-winning visual effects studio, Weta Workshop.

‘Weta Cave’ will be a place for fans and tourists to get up and close to the film-makers behind effects in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

Due to open in May, the Cave will be based next to Peter Jackson’s empire in Miramar, Wellington.

Weta Ltd general manager Tim Launder said the store, which will stock limited-edition collectibles, DVDs, books and clothing, had been built to help satisfy Wellington's thriving movie tourism sector.

Weta co-owner Richard Taylor said he wanted to open a store years ago, but space had been the main deterrent. Weta Digital had since moved some of its operations, leaving about 220 square metres on the corner of its Camperdown Rd premises.

''The big challenge for us is because of confidentiality we can't have [fans] visit the workshop but we desperately want to show them something that's a little bit of what we do,'' says Taylor.

Visitors can expect to see a 15-minute ''behind-the-scenes'' tour of the workshop, which will be screened in a small, purpose-built theatre. An exhibition space is also under construction, featuring props and costumes that will regularly change, including items from Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and King Kong.

Souvenirs available for sale will range from King Kong figurines to $1000 ray guns.
