Conchords nominated for Emmys
23 Jul 2008
New Zealand’s cult comedy duo Flight of the Conchords has received four Emmy nominations.
The nominations - for their Flight of the Conchords HBO television series - are for directing, writing, and original music and lyrics.
Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, both originally from Wellington, have been riding a wave of international popularity since the release of their first television series in 2007.
Earlier this year they received a Grammy award for best comedy album, and the TV show soundtrack went to number three on the American billboard charts.
Second series
In Flight of the Conchords, they’re cast as a marginally talented Kiwi folk duo struggling to make the big time in New York. Fellow Kiwi actor Rhys Darby plays their bumbling manager. The show airs on US cable channel HBO.
McKenzie and Clement are currently working on the script for a second series.
The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on 21 September.
The nominations are for:
- Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series - James Bobin
- Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series - James Bobin, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie
- Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics: "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)" - Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement
- Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics: "Inner City Pressure" - Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement and James Bobin.
Other nominees in the directing and writing categories include previous Emmy winners, 30 Rock and The Office (both on NBC), and ABC’s Pushing Daisies.
