NZ alpine music fest beams worldwide

31 Jul 2008

A free music event at a luxury New Zealand alpine resort featuring international and local stars will be beamed to more than 30 countries.

MTV Snow Jam - on 16 August at Terrace Downs Resort, near popular South Island ski field Mt Hutt - is one of the Canterbury region’s most popular events, and the MTV broadcast puts it in the international spotlight.

A line-up of artists including United States hip hop stars Lil Jon, Fat Joe and Baby Bash will perform alongside Donavon Frankenreiter, The Grates, The Potbelleez and local acts including, Opshop, Cut Off Your Hands, P-Money, PNC and David Dallas.

Spectacular location
The free annual music event set against spectacular New Zealand scenery is produced by MTV Australia and New Zealand for broadcast locally and internationally across Europe and Asia.

"Snow Jam is a perfect blend of everything - spectacular landscape, live local and international music and a party atmosphere," said MTV NZ general manager Chris Keely.

MTV Snow Jam is the only event of its kind held in New Zealand. Local production crews are filming content for the Snow Jam special.

Proud music history
Christchurch City Council metropolitan youth advisor Shailer Hart says MTV Snow Jam is a hugely popular event for young people.

"Christchurch has a very proud music history and it’s going to be great to see some of our local acts performing alongside some of the big names from the international music scene,’’ she said.

Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism chief executive Christine Prince says she is thrilled MTV has chosen to hold the Snow Jam in Canterbury, and is working to ensure the free concert is staged there again next year.

"This is a dream event if you’re young and into music. It’s not often you get to see such a fantastic line-up of international artists performing at one event and the fact the concert is taking place in such a spectacular location and is free, automatically adds to its appeal,’’ says Ms Prince.

Rap stars’ first visit
Ms Prince says this will be the first visit to New Zealand for some of the US rap stars.

"They are reportedly very excited about coming here and so are we excited about having them here. We’ve been told to expect big entourages and big bling so it’s going to be a truly memorable weekend for the region.’’

In addition to the free one-day music festival, the MTV crew will spend three days filming material for four separate shows for MTV Australia and New Zealand. They will show action sports on Mt Hutt, artist interviews and behind the scenes footage.

An MTV Snow Jam Special will air on MTV NZ on September 6.
