South Island is top fishing spot
04 Aug 2008
New Zealand’s South Island has been included in the world’s top eight fishing destinations by Singapore Airlines’ in-flight magazine.
The August ’08 edition of Silver Kris described the South Island as one of the best fishing locations in the world, and cited the Motueka River in the Nelson region as a particularly fine spot for trout fishing.
"The water is crystal clear and it even has stunning scenery to boot, making this a beautiful and challenging river to fish," the magazine commends.
Abel Tasman National Park
Motueka, located at the top of the South Island, is the gateway to the famous outdoor playground of Abel Tasman National Park.
As well as world-class fly fishing on the Motueka River, visitors can experience the laid-back, local lifestyle at the many art galleries, cafés and boutique wineries in the surrounding region.
With a strong emphasis on outdoor adventure tourism such as kayaking, fishing and hiking, combined with one of the most temperate climates in the country, there’s never a dull moment in this out-of-the-way corner of New Zealand.
Fishing and tourism
New Zealand is renowned for being a first-rate fishing destination, and many tour companies offer packages catering for this niche market.
