New Zealand eco-label receives world class recognition
29 Aug 2008
A New Zealand eco-label has been praised for adhering to some of the highest environmental standards in the world.
In a recent study commissioned by the British government, New Zealand’s Environmental Choice label was named as having some of the most scrupulous criteria for assessing products, making it a highly reliable indicator of environmentally friendly goods and services.
"This puts Environmental Choice on the map with organisations that are legendary for their commitment, their standards and depth of authority, and whose breadth of environmental certification shows the way forward," said Environmental Choice general manager Robin Taylor .
Stringent criteria
Britain's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) studied over 200 eco-labels from around the world, and cited Environmental Choice as a leader in its field for assessment standards and methodology.
The study also showed Environmental Choice to be of a higher standard than many European eco-labels.
"Very few global competitors made the cut ... this global achievement is of such significance that it uplifts our country's whole environmental reputation," said Mr Taylor.
Eco-labelling
Eco-labelling is a voluntary method of environmental certification and labelling that is used around the world. However not all eco-labels meet the same high standards as Environmental Choice and consumers need to be aware of ‘green-washing’ - when companies label a product or service as ‘environmentally friendly’ when it isn’t necessarily so.
By examining the validity of eco-labels and ranking them in order of credibility, consumers can make informed choices as to which products are truly ‘green’. The Environmental Choice eco-label can be identified by a planet and a tick and has been New Zealand Government owned and supported since 1992.
