WETA designer wins 2008 WOW supreme award

29 Sep 2008

Wellington costume designer Nadine Jaggi, who works for the Oscar-winning WETA Workshop, is the Supreme Award-winner at the 2008 Montana World of WearableArt.

Jaggi’s intricate leather creation representing 'Omitho Maia' (the bird mother) has won the coveted top prize from 189 garments submitted by designers from around the world.

New Zealand’s creative capital Wellington scooped seven of the highly coveted prizes, including winning the entire South Pacific section.

Mesmerising kaleidoscope
The 20th Montana WOW Awards Show, which opened in Wellington with a mesmerising kaleidoscope of garments showcased during an extravaganza that included acrobatics, dance, comedy, pyrotechnics and a menagerie of stunning white birds, runs until October 5.

WOW guest judge, BBC correspondent Michael Peschardt described the event as "colourful, spectacular, artistic, funny, and almost impossible to judge. I’ve seen major cultural and fashion shows around the world and this is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before."

Second-time entrant
To achieve her winning garment, Nadine Jaggi had to do incredible things to leather, working to wet mould, emboss, carve, hand-dye and finally hand-sew it together into a highly-crafted gown and headpiece.

Jaggi, a second-time entrant in WOW, described her creation as "an ethereal protector of the beautiful feathered creatures of our world".

WOW judge and corrugated iron artist Jeff Thomson said the winning garment was a challenging creation: "Nadine really stretched to the edge of her imagination and pushed the material into another dimension creating a stunning piece."

Ornitho Maia was also winner of the Air New Zealand South Pacific Section.

Jaggi has been employed at WETA - film-maker Peter Jackson's television and film effects facility - since 2006, and worked on concept costumes for the 'Prince Caspian' and 'Halo' films.

Other winners
Celebrated New Zealand artist Bill Hammond inspired German designer Margarete Palz, of Zweibrucken, whose double ensemble in recycled photographic paper - High Societies Visit Bill Hammond’s Paradise - was the Supreme Award runner-up.

A previous award winner, Palz discovered Hammond’s art when she came to New Zealand for the 2007 WOW awards.
