New Zealand rolls into the record books

18 Sep 2008

New Zealand can add yet another Guinness World Record to its long list with the successful completion of a forward roll attempt in Rotorua.

Members of Rotorua's Mid Island GymSports Club were joined by four New Zealand Trampoline Team members to roll a combined distance of 10183.9 meters in one hour - 1335 meters further than the height of Mount Everest.

Under strict Guinness World Record guidelines, the team of 12 rolled a pre-determined circuit for one hour and, despite the carpet burns, said they were ecstatic with the result.

"The team went hard for an hour and absolutely destroyed the world record," said event organiser Sarah Ashmole.

The previous record of 9092.4 meters had been held by Germany since 2002.

New Zealand plays host
Yesterday’s record attempt was promoting the coming Indo Pacific Trampolining and Tumbling Championships due to be held in Rotorua next month.

2008 is the first year that the biennial championships have been held in New Zealand and host club GymSports New Zealand will be coordinating events for 300 athletes from seven different countries.

The Indo Pacific Trampolining and Tumbling Championships will be held at the Rotorua Energy Event Centre from October 13 - 19.

Record-breaking streak
Recently New Zealand has been on a record-breaking streak. Aucklander Mike Heard broke the world record for completing over 100 bungy jumps in 10 hours in August, and earlier in the year, Southlander Jimmy Clark made the record books by shearing 560 sheep in eight hours.
