Auckland hotel on lonely hearts rescue mission

19 Jan 2009

Forget the current ‘man drought’, an Auckland luxury hotel has come up with a new strategy for Kiwi single girls feeling a little lonely around St Valentine’s Day.

On the love saint’s special day - Saturday, 14 February - The Langham hotel is offering a ladies afternoon tea as a ‘pick-me-up’ for local lonely hearts.

They will be hosted by The Langham’s resident ‘Mr Darcy’ (inspired by Jane Austen), and treated to a five-star experience that includes a cocktail, and either a traditional afternoon tea or the champagne option for the most glamorous eat-your-heart-out opportunity.

Date to celebrate
The St Valentine’s Day event is based on the often quoted statistic - which may, or may not be true - that a 32-year-old New Zealand woman has as much chance of finding a partner her own age as an 82-year-old.

Single New Zealand women were regularly reminded of this situation, according to The Langham’s marketing and communications manager Rachel Broadmore.

"We are saying enough is enough - starting with Valentines Day! If the man drought does exist then there are indeed many lovely New Zealand women who will be at a loose end," Miss Broadmore said.

While the prospect of St Valentine’s Day could fill people with delight, dread or total disinterest, for New Zealand Bridget Joneses or Carrie Bradshaws this date was now one to be celebrated, she said.

Lady packages
The hotel is using the St Valentine’s occasion to launch a new range of "lady packages" designed to pamper.

The signature Langham Lady afternoon tea that’s available daily is not just reserved for singletons. Other options include "cheeky after work cocktails" and overnight shopping trip packages.

The hotel will be opening its new Asian-style Chuan luxury spa in March 2009.
