Singles queue for 1st Matchmaking Flight

01 Oct 2009

Passengers might be checking in single file on Air New Zealand’s Los Angeles to Auckland flight on October 13 but the return journey could be a different matter if the world’s first Matchmaking Flight works its magic.

Air New Zealand has invited singles looking for romance and adventure to join a special Matchmaking Flight that will have a party atmosphere from take off to landing - and beyond.

Star guests on the 10.30pm NZ bound journey from LA will be America’s favourite bachelor Jason Mesnick and girlfriend Molly Malaney who got together earlier in the year when the ABC shot a series of "The Bachelor" in New Zealand.

Jason & Molly
Air NZ says the world-first singles cabin is close to capacity, with love-seeking travellers joining The Bachelor programme’s Jason and Molly on board.

The matchmaking experience will kick off with a party at the departure gate, followed by matchmaking advice from Jason and Molly, complimentary party packs, an open bar, and in-flight activities designed to find each passenger their perfect match.

Once in Auckland, Matchmaking Flight passengers will mix with single New Zealanders at the ultimate South Pacific coupling experience.

The ‘Great Matchmaking Party’ starts with a cocktail pre-party at Auckland SKYCITY’s new bar, "twentyone". Guests then move to the city’s North Shore for an official function at The Wharf on Northcote Point and return to SKYCITY for an after party.

Love connections
Single Kiwis and celebrity guests have been asked to mix and mingle with Matchmaking Flight passengers in the hope they may make romantic connections.

To help travellers with their quest Jason suggests that mingling passengers focus on the person they are engaging with. "It’s really important to concentrate on who you’re with and to give that person your full attention," says Jason. "If you’re thinking about something or someone else, you might miss a comment or behaviour that tells you a lot about that person."

Another recommendation from Molly is to look for common hobbies. "After that initial introduction, try to get past the surface-level subjects and talk about what you like doing," says Molly. "Is your love interest into photography? Hiking? Try to do the things you both enjoy together, and see if you connect. Attraction doesn’t go very far unless you share these things."

The Bachelor returns
Both Jason and Molly will be returning to some of the NZ destinations where filming of the show’s final episodes for the 13th season, took place.

As well as re-visiting Queenstown to go skydiving, the couple will explore Milford Sound - described as the eighth wonder of the world by Rudyard Kipling. They will also travel to the famous geothermal region of Rotorua in the North Island before going on to Waitomo Caves to see glow worms and try black water rafting.

Jason said he found true love in New Zealand during his February visit - having fallen for the beauty of the country.

"I have done a lot of travelling in my life, but honestly New Zealand is the most beautiful place I have ever been," he said.

Finding a match
Jason and Molly say they hope passengers take advantage of their time on the Matchmaking Flight.

"This is everyone’s chance to get to know people who share a sense of adventure and a willingness to take a risk to find their match," says the couple.

"People on this flight should be ready to show their personalities from the minute they step onboard. We wouldn’t have gotten to really know each other if we hadn’t done that; we hope for the same results for everyone on this flight."

Group travel
A contingent of Canadian and US media will be on the Matchmaking Flight and following a group of singles who’ve booked a tour of New Zealand covering adrenalin adventure sites and popular tourist destinations throughout both islands.

Air New Zealand says the Matchmaking Flight is the first of its kind and the perfect adventure for people who would travel the world for love.

A special web site and social network has been set up so passengers can connect with other singles and find more information on the Matchmaking Flight, romance packages and related events.
