Gap year five in online Kiwi challenge

06 Nov 2009

New Zealand is in the spotlight in a new online gap year competition taking five young British travellers down-under for an adrenalin-filled Kiwi adventure that puts a new twist on traditional reality TV survival shows.

The five finalists have been chosen out of hundreds of young travellers who applied for ‘The Gap Year: Challenge New Zealand’.

The competition will see the five intrepid travellers fly to New Zealand to compete in a series of extreme challenges over four action-packed weeks - all of which can be followed online from today (6.11.09).

Kiwi challenge
The group will explore the landscape, discover Kiwi culture, and take on some of the country’s most adventurous activities - including bungy jumps and white water rafting.

Their travel antics will be posted in short videos and updates on Bebo, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube. Viewers will be able to get actively involved with the show by interacting with the travellers and influencing their journey.

Each week one contestant will be eliminated and flown home.

"Go all the way"
The initiative, by Tourism New Zealand and Endemol - an award-winning UK digital media company - aims to promote New Zealand as the ultimate adventure destination.

It also supports the country’s latest UK tourism campaign "Go all the way", directed at the backpacker market and encouraging young people to travel all the way to New Zealand.

The five successful contestants are model Kimberley, student Antonio, upcoming director Emma, male model Chris and show jumper Holly.

In their "ultimate adventure", the travellers will be pushed to their physical and mental limits underwater, in the air and on-land in a bid to prove they are the ultimate gap year traveller.

Gap year homepages
Each week day, their adventures will be documented on The Gap Year homepages which currently have nearly 12,000 followers across Bebo, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube.

One traveller will be sent home at the end of each week, eventually leaving two finalists to battle it out in the concluding week to reveal The Gap Year: Challenge New Zealand winner.
