Auckland to host three-week sailing festival

Auckland - the city of sails - will host three prestigious international sailing events in March 2010 during the Auckland Festival of Sail.
The three-week sailing feast will include the BMW World Sailing Final, Omega Auckland Match Racing Regatta and Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland.
The racing will coincide with the Auckland International Boat Show - the main showcase for New Zealand’s marine industry.
Auckland Festival of Sail
Auckland Festival of Sail, organised by Emirates Team New Zealand, is a new event on Auckland’s summer events calendar.
Auckland mayor John Banks says the festival will provide "the perfect opportunity to showcase Auckland and its spectacular waterfront."
"We look to welcoming the world’s best sailors to our shores next year."
An event village will be established at Viaduct harbour - portside in down town Auckland - where the programme will also include off-water activities and entertainment.
Louis Vuitton Trophy series
The Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland is a spin-off from the inaugural Louis Vuitton Pacific Series held in Auckland in March 2009.
The 2010 Auckland regatta will be the second in a series. The first was held last month (November 2009) in Nice, France.
The LV Pacific Series injected in excess of NZ$16 million into the Auckland economy.
Tourism Auckland chief executive, Graeme Osborne, said the Auckland Festival of Sail would draw locals and tourists and further cement the region’s reputation as a destination suited to hosting world-class marine events.

Omega Auckland Match Race Regatta
2 - 6 March 2010
Hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS), the Omega Auckland Match Race Regatta will attract the world’s best match racing sailors to Auckland. At the same time, emerging racing champions will be in Auckland for the World Junior Match Racing Championships, also hosted by the RNZYS.
Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland
7 - 21 March 2010
The Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland (LVT) - previously known as the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series - will be the main attraction of the Auckland Festival of Sail. The Auckland regatta is the second in a series that began in Nice, France (November 2009).
BMW Sailing World Cup Final
21 - 25 March 2010
Auckland will host the final of the BMW Sailing World Cup. New Zealand is the current champion. In this match racing regatta, amateur sailors from seven international teams sail identical boats to determine the world’s best amateur match racing crew. RNZYS will host this event in partnership with BMW NZ.
Auckland International Boat Show
10 - 14 March 2010
Auckland Festival of Sail will coincide with the Auckland International Boat Show, providing an opportunity for Auckland to showcase its innovative and diverse marine sector to the sailing world.
