The Bachelor finds love in New Zealand
25 Feb 2009
America’s favourite bachelor says he’s found true love in New Zealand - and he’s not just talking about his quest for a fiancée.
Jason Mesnick, who is on a search for happiness on ABC's hit reality show The Bachelor, fell in love with New Zealand when the show filmed its final episodes in Queenstown and the Bay of Islands.
"I've done a lot of travelling in my life," Mesnick said. "But honestly New Zealand is the most beautiful place I have ever been."
12.5 million viewers
Filming the final episodes of the 13th season of The Bachelor - now screening to more than 12.5 million viewers throughout the United States - brought Jason, his final three ‘bachelorettes’ and the show's television crew to New Zealand.
In episode seven, Jason dates each of the three finalists in romantic settings in and around the picturesque southern resort town of Queenstown, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and overlooked by the Southern Alps.
Romantic escapades
As part of the elimination process, Jason wooed his bachelorettes in a series of romantic escapades including a dramatic helicopter flight over mountains and lake to a private picnic spot, a tandem bungy jump at the home of the world-famous extreme sport, alfresco dining at an award wining winery, sailing aboard a classic yacht once owned by Winston Churchill, in secluded pools, relaxing in a jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub, and overnights at an exclusive luxury lodge.
At the end of the three "fantasy dates" in Queenstown, one unlucky bachelorette was eliminated and filming moved to the Bay of Islands in the north of the North Island for the next episode.
Final episode
In the dramatic final episode, Jason took his final two dates for a picnic on an iconic pink shell beach, and played golf at a course overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Episode seven screened on the ABC in America this week, and the series final airs in two weeks time.
Tight security and intense secrecy surrounded filming and details of the Bay of Islands filming can not be revealed until screening.
