NZ bar creates cheeky Susan Boyle cocktail

28 Apr 2009

A New Zealand bar has paid tribute to Scottish songbird Susan Boyle by creating a cocktail in honour of the ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ contestant.

Luke Dallow, owner of the Sale St bar in Auckland, said the drink was designed to be "a bit cheeky, just like she is". It is a vodka-based concoction topped with a creamy Frangelico layer and sprinkled with chocolate shavings.

"When you take a sip, it'll leave a little moustache," said Dallow.

Overnight celebrity
Bushy-browed, grey-haired Susan Boyle became an overnight celebrity after appearing on the British talent show and wowing judges and the audience with her version of 'I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Miserables.

YouTube footage of Boyle's appearance has been viewed more than 100 million times in just a fortnight.

NZ fan club
Dallow was among those to view her performance and said he felt sufficiently wowed to set up a New Zealand Susan Boyle fan club, with his bar as headquarters.

"When I saw the clip, I had a little tear in my eye. It's inspiring to witness some of that human spirit," he said.

"The audience were giving her a hard time but then she opened up her lungs and she was just sensational. We think she's a sort of modern-day Cinderella."

Sale St bar talk
Dallow said Susan Boyle had been a constant topic of conversation at Sale St bar over the past week.

As well as creating the cocktail, he had sent Boyle an invitation offering to fly her to New Zealand for a concert once the television show was over. "We got in touch to let her know how proud we are of her," he said.

The ‘Susan Boyle’ costs $16 and contains vodka, wild strawberry and sour rhubarb liqueurs, blossom water, cranberry juice and mixed berries.

Bar staff say it has proved a major hit with patrons.
