US bidder snaps up NZ luxury deal of century
14 May 2009
A Californian bidder has scored New Zealand’s luxury travel deal of the century, winning a NZ$31,500 package for a quarter of its retail value.
The ‘Give it up to Live it up’ campaign offering two people a life of luxury in New Zealand for a month was auctioned on eBay for 14 days and attracted bids from all over the world.
Bidding closed at 10.24am this morning (14.05.09) after a frenzy of last minute interest.
The luxurious holiday will allow the American winner to experience the best New Zealand lodges and view the country in style from helicopter, private yacht and chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles - for less than it costs most backpackers to go by bus and stay in hostels.
Last minute bidding
Organised by New Zealand Luxury, a company that represents a collection of the country’s leading luxury tourism operators, the luxury package attracted just 36 bids and sold for NZ$7,500 - 75 percent less than what it was worth.
As predicted, bids increased by double in the last five minutes with a number of US bidders battling it out until Terrence L Cowman, of Woodland Hills California, placed the figure that clinched the deal.
With the current state of the New Zealand dollar and the quality of luxury tourism included in the package, organisers says the winner has scored a "steal at the price".
Luxury travel
It’s not yet known when Mr Cowman will take up the luxury deal but included is four weeks accommodation at some of New Zealand’s leading luxury lodges, boutique hotels and one of the world’s most exclusive private villas.
There’s also the chance to fly in style on a private jet, and experience some exclusive helicopter adventures. A cruise aboard a private yacht and the opportunity to be chauffeur-driven in luxury vehicles through some of New Zealand’s most stunning natural scenery is also part of the package.
Untouched World
Money raised from the luxury campaign will go towards the Untouched World Charitable Trust which helps young adults develop life skills to maximise their potential and achieve a sustainable future.
The trust is run by the New Zealand-based Untouched World clothing brand which is the first fashion company in the world to be recognised by the United Nations for sustainability.
The company also donated a range of men’s and women’s clothing as part of the online auction.
