Wellington, New Zealand, will host the 2nd Asia Pacific Outgames - a major international gay and lesbian sport, culture and human rights event - from 12 to 19 March 2011.
The Asia Pacific Outgames will include sports competitions, a human rights conference series, and a cultural festival.
Outgames programme
Sports proposed include softball, running, swimming, tennis, volleyball and dancesport. Other sports being investigated for inclusion, on either a competitive or demonstration basis, include rugby, netball, water polo, rowing, squash, golf and mountain biking.
Cultural events will include opening and closing celebrations, theatre performances, and traditional Māori cultural experiences.
Conference themes, which will have a strong Asia Pacific focus, are likely to address human rights issues and reflect the 25th anniversary of New Zealand’s homosexual law reform.
Wellington 2011
With more than 1000 participants from New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands and Asia expected, the Outgames will be the biggest gay and lesbian event that New Zealand’s capital city has hosted.
