Two top New Zealand luxury lodges - Kauri Cliffs, in Northland, and The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, in Hawke's Bay - have come in #1 and #2 in an international travel survey.
The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs has been named top lodge / resort in Australasia and the South Pacific region, while Cape Kidnappers Farm was ranked in second place in the same section of the 2009 World's Best Awards readers' survey by Travel + Leisure magazine.
Hotel rankings
Hotel rankings are based on ratings for rooms and facilities, location, service, restaurants and food, and value.
Other New Zealand lodges in the top 15 lodge / resort category were:
- Huka Lodge, Taupo (#8)
- Treetops Lodge & Wilderness Experience, Rotorua (#10)
- Millbrook Resort, Queenstown (#15).
For the fourth year running, Queenstown (at #3) was the only New Zealand city to gain a spot in the top three cities for the South Pacific region.
Air New Zealand was named in the world's top ten international airlines.
Top 100 hotels
The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs ranks #16 on the 2009 world's top 100 hotels list. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers is #21 in the top 100 hotels.
The 2009 World's Best Awards survey results will be featured in the August issue of Travel + Leisure, and winners will be honoured at a ceremony on 21 July in New York.
Relais & Chateaux
Owned and developed by New York-based art collectors and philanthropists Julian Robertson and family, The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs and The Farm at Cape Kidnappers are members of the exclusive Relais & Chateaux hotel group.
A family holiday in New Zealand in the 1970s first inspired financier and golf lover Julian Robertson to buy land at Matauri Bay, on the Pacific Coast of New Zealand's northern-most region. At Kauri Cliffs, Robertson developed an international golf course, and later the luxury lodge.
Opened in 2007, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers is built on a 2000-hectare sheep farm on the coast of New Zealand’s renowned Hawke's Bay wine region. It also features an international golf course.
