Conchords nominated for six Emmys
20 Jul 2009
New Zealand’s favourite comedy duo, Flight of the Conchords has done it again with six Emmy nominations for their US hit television show.
After narrowly missing out in 2008, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are short listed for ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’, and ‘Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series’.
Jemaine Clement is nominated for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series’.
The show also received other nominations for directing, original music and lyrics, and sound mixing.
Folk singers
In the self-titled series, now in its second season and screening on Prime in New Zealand, Clement and McKenzie - both from Wellington - play marginally talented folk singers struggling to make it in New York.
Fellow Kiwi comedian Rhys Darby plays their hapless manager, Murray.
Billing themselves as "formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo", the Conchords use a combination of witty observation, characterisation and acoustic folk guitars.
Second season
Flight of the Conchords 10-episode second season debuted on HBO (Home Box Office) in January 2009.
The pair picked up a Grammy award in February 2008 for best comedy album, ‘Distant Future’.
There has been speculation that the second series of Flight of the Conchords would be the last, allowing both actors to pursue solo acting careers. However, McKenzie’s mother was reported yesterday as saying those plans could now be on hold.
The Conchords were "really excited" about the nominations, she said.
Life is good
Life is good privately, as well as professionally, for the famous pair.
In August 2008, Jemaine Clement married long-time girlfriend Miranda Manasiadis, and shortly after welcomed his son Sophocles Iraia.
Brett McKenzie married his girlfriend Hannah Clarke in March 2009, and they are now expecting a baby.
Clement - just back from a break in Greece - flew into New Plymouth today. He has been tipped for a lead role in Predicament - a movie based on the book by Taranaki author Ronald Hugh Morrieson - which has just begun shooting in the South Taranaki town of Hawera.
McKenzie is keeping a low profile in Wellington.
61st Primetime Emmys
The Emmy Awards are US television’s highest honours.
The 61st Primetime Emmys will be handed out in Los Angeles on 20 September. Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, the show will include awards for television actors, actresses, mini-series, made-for-TV movies and a host of other honours.
