Bachelor hunt takes to the airwaves

17 Jul 2009

The quest to find New Zealand’s own ‘Bachelor’ is hotting up with a tourism promotion timed to coincide with the airing of the hit US reality show on NZ television.

Two episodes of the popular ABC programme were filmed in New Zealand earlier this year and are due to screen on TV2 at 8.30pm this Friday (17 July).

Romantic date
To celebrate, Tourism New Zealand is joining forces with radio station ZM and TV2 to give Kiwis the chance to experience a little romance for themselves.

One lucky couple will have the opportunity to win the same romantic date that 'The Bachelor' Jason Mesnick had in Queenstown, where he wooed his final three 'bachelorettes' at romantic locations on the shores of Lake Wakatipu overlooked by the Southern Alps.

Filming then moved to the Bay of Islands in the far north for a dramatic final episode where Jason took his final two dates for a picnic on an iconic pink shell beach, and played golf at a course overlooking the Pacific Ocean before making his final choice.

Matchmaking flight
Jason, who says he fell in love with New Zealand during his visit, is due to return soon. He and his lady-love [we won't mention her name because The Batchelor is still showing in New Zealand] are returning on a special mission that will give have them helping out with some match-making.

Jason and his partner will be special guests on an Air New Zealand 'Matchmaking Flight' scheduled to leave Los Angeles for Auckland on 13 October.

Most romantic place on earth
"I fell in love with New Zealand during The Bachelor - it’s truly the most romantic place on earth," said Mesnick.

"We can’t wait to return to the stunning scenery and Kiwi hospitality, and we hope that all the matchmaking flight singles have as much success as we did in finding one another."

Roger Poulton, vice president, Air New Zealand - the Americas said: "Jason and ... know something about finding the right match, and we’re hoping they can share this with the singles on Air New Zealand’s matchmaking flight. "

"Returning to New Zealand for the magic and romance - this time in a committed relationship - is very important to them, and we’re glad to take them back."

Matchmaking flight passengers will enjoy a complete matchmaking experience beginning with a send-off party at the departure gate in Los Angeles.

At 30,000 feet, travellers can expect matchmaking advice from a celebrity host, complimentary party packs, an open bar, speed dating and other games. Once on the ground in Auckland, they will be invited to a ‘Great Matchmaking Ball’ at SkyCity in Auckland.

The Bachelor’s next star
Tourism New Zealand and ZM are also calling for all Kiwi bachelors to apply now to be the show’s next star.

The Bachelor
is currently taking applications, and Tourism New Zealand says that after the hugely successful series filming in New Zealand, it wants to show that as well as proving the country is the most romantic, picturesque and friendly place in the world, it is also home to the sexiest, most manly, charming men.

Candidates based in New Zealand or internationally can put their own names forward or be nominated by another party as well as suggesting other eligible Kiwi blokes. Anyone interested should register at Warner Bros The Bachelor website.
