One in a million New Zealand holiday
24 Jul 2009
Australian Shannyn Gourley, from Victoria, is the lucky ‘one in a million’ Aussie who now has a New Zealand luxury holiday waiting for her.
Gourley is the winner of the ‘Thanks a Million Oz!’ competition, celebrating the arrival of one million Australian visitors to New Zealand within a 12-month period.
Launched in May, the promotion was Tourism New Zealand’s way of saying thanks to our trans-Tasman neighbours for visiting New Zealand.
Singing NZ’s praises
To enter, participants had to describe New Zealand within 25 words - a big ask.
Shannyn Gourley sang New Zealand’s praises with a poem:
Spirits depleted, Boredom Chronic.
New Zealand adventure, perfect tonic!
Mixing one part adrenaline,
scenery for good measure,
stir in adventure,
pour out PLEASURE!"
Excitement and adventure
The winning entry was chosen because of its creativity and originality, according to Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton, who helped with the selection process.
Shannyn Gourley’s poem stood out, Hickton said, because "it really captured the excitement and adventure that is New Zealand".
"I hope Shannyn enjoys her fantastic prize and explores more of what New Zealand has to offer."
Dream come true
Shannyn, whose partner is a Kiwi and can’t wait to visit home, said she couldn’t "wipe the smile off" her face because it was a dream come true.
"I went to New Zealand once a number of years ago with a friend. We drove a campervan around the South Island and it was absolutely beautiful. I have never been to the North Island so I am very much looking forward to this," she said.
Millionaire’s holiday prize
The millionaire’s holiday package includes accommodation arranged by Navigate Oceania in some of New Zealand’s top luxury lodges, including the Boatshed (Waiheke Island), Treetops Lodge and Wilderness Experience (Rotorua), Wharekauhau Country Estate (Martinborough) and Remarkables Lodge (Queenstown).
Air New Zealand is providing return business class flights.
