Grey's Anatomy tunes in to Kiwi music

18 Feb 2010

Fans of award-winning US medical drama Grey’s Anatomy had a little taste of New Zealand recently - in the form of a song by Kiwi band 'Minuit'.

I’m Still Dancing, which appeared on the band’s latest album, 'Find Me Before I Die A Lonely Death.com' appeared in episode 13 of Grey’s Anatomy, a top-rating US show - which screened there on February 5.

In America, Grey’s Anatomy attracts an average of 15 million viewers per episode. Minuit consists of a trio of musicians from Nelson, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island - Ryan Beehre, Ruth Carr and Paul Dodge.

The band is thrilled that their song was used, but said it came as a complete surprise, especially as I’m Still Dancing is one of the more obscure tracks on the album.

A feel for New Zealand
Minuit member Ruth Carr, who wrote the song, said it was inspired by political events which happened in Pakistan. When the Taliban forces took over some of the country two years ago, she said, one of the social activities they banned was dancing.

"I wrote it on holiday in Mahia [on the east coast of the North Island], when we were swimming with Moko the dolphin."

The song was picked up completely by chance by the producers of Grey’s Anatomy. Minuit is signed to a New Zealand publishing company called Native Tongue, who has a branch office in Los Angeles.

"Those dudes pitch music to different TV and movie projects and this time, someone chose us," said Carr.

True Kiwi song
I’m Still Dancing was produced and recorded by Minuit in Nelson, in a studio built into an old storeroom in the centre of town.

Band member Ryan Beehre still lives in Nelson, although he’s about to move up to Auckland.

Episode 13 of Grey’s Anatomy will screen in New Zealand on April 27.

Nelson: sunshine capital
Nelson has the title of New Zealand’s sunshine capital because it recorded more golden rays in 2009 than any other town.

The town is home to many of New Zealand’s best artists and craftspeople, including traditional and contemporary Māori artists.
