Marlborough lists as top wine destination

09 Feb 2010

New Zealand’s world famous Marlborough wine growing region has again made the world list of top wine tourism destinations.

Tripadvisor, the world’s biggest travel community, has recently announced the most popular destinations for wine connoisseurs, based on traveller popularity and expert opinion - and Marlborough, entitled ‘A Sip of the Antipodes’, is in the top 10.

Marlborough was also ranked as one of the world’s best wine regions by travel guide Lonely Planet, and was included in the Tripadvisor 2008 top 10 list - the only New Zealand wine region to do so.

Wine tourism
Tripadvisor, which says wine tourism as the latest trend among discerning travellers, describes Marlborough as "presumably New Zealand’s main wine tourism destination. Famous for its varietal white wines, the region’s incredible sauvignon blancs are much sought-after."

Other regions to make the exclusive list are: Bordeaux, Champagne-Ardenne, Tuscany, Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Barossa Valley, La Roja, Central Valley (Chile), and Stellenbosch.

Tripadvisor says wine culture attracts thousands of tourists a year to the regions with the most illustrious wine-producing traditions, and there are many destinations in the world where it is possible to combine wine and tourism.

Michelle Perry, vice-president of communications at TripAdvisor says the regions chosen offered "some of the most exquisite wines in the world" and also afforded travellers the "best in hotels, restaurants and wine tours."
