Russell Crowe joins Hollywood Walk of Fame

14 Apr 2010

New Zealand-born Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe is the 2404th star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The ceremony to honour Crowe with the coveted star took place yesterday (13.04.10) with some of Hollywood’s A-list celebrities in attendance, as well as his wife Australian actress Danielle Spencer and their three children. The occasion was informally dubbed "Russell Crowe Day" in Hollywood.

Actor Sam Worthington from Avatar, US talk show host Jay Leno and famous American director / producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazier were among those at the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard.

Crowe’s Walk of Fame star lies in front of the Kodak Theatre, home to the Oscars, and next to the stars of Hollywood elites Nicole Kidman, Anthony Hopkins and Martin Scorsese.

The humble actor admitted that this wasn’t the first time he had been offered the prestigious star.

"I’ve turned it down a number of times before because I didn’t think I’d done enough. But now I sort of got to the point where gee whiz if I don’t say yes soon, they’ll probably stop asking so I might as well get it done," Crowe said.

Kiwi star
Russell Crowe was born in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand but moved to Australia with his family as a young child. His cousins, Martin and Jeff Crowe, are former New Zealand national cricket captains.

Crowe briefly attended high school in Auckland when his family moved back to New Zealand, but left for Australia to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.

Russell Crowe got his first big Hollywood break with the movie The Quick and the Dead, in which he starred alongside Sharon Stone. Crowe went on to win an Academy Award for Gladiator in 2001 and a BAFTA for A Beautiful Mind in 2002.

Accepting his star, Crowe joked: "Next to Sir Anthony Hopkins, that’s not a bad spot. It’s a real nice piece of real estate."

The Hollywood Walk of Fame - in Hollywood, Los Angeles - is a sidewalk or pavement that acts as a living tribute to some of the world’s most famous celebrities.

Along the 5.6km Walk of Fame each star is inlaid in bronze, with a pictorial emblem signifying one of the five categories for which the star was awarded - film, broadcast television, recording, radio and live theatre.
