New Zealand tops for outdoor adventure

06 May 2010

Several popular tourist destinations have put New Zealand at the forefront of outdoor and adventure travel after making Trip Advisor’s list of top destinations in the world.

Queenstown fared best winning the title of ‘No 1 Outdoor and Adventure Destination in the World’ in the annual Travellers Choice Awards, as well as coming 15th overall in the ‘Top 25 Destinations in the World’.

New Zealand also featured in a number of other categories, but dominated the outdoor and adventure sector taking six awards for ‘Top 10 Outdoor & Adventure Destinations in the South Pacific’.

Queenstown was number one in the South Pacific, with Te Anau third, Lake Wanaka fourth, Rotorua fifth, Taupo sixth and Franz Josef at number 10.

Queenstown - heart-pumping thrills
In nominating Queenstown, Trip Advisor said the resort offered "staggering beauty and heart-pumping thrills".

Destination Queenstown’s Graham Budd said the awards were testament to the quality of the town’s operators.

"Queenstown should feel very proud of this fantastic international achievement. This really is exceptional recognition for the town and reinforces our positioning as the premier four-season, lake and alpine resort in the Southern Hemisphere," Budd said.

The 2010 Travellers’ Choice Awards named Queenstown as:

  • fourth favourite 'Europeans' Destination in the World'
  • second overall in 'Top 10 South Pacific Destinations'
  • second in 'Culture and Sightseeing Destinations in the South Pacific'
  • third in 'Top 10 Food & Wine Destinations in the South Pacific'
  • third in 'Top 10 Nightlife Destinations in the South Pacific'.

The web-based Trip Advisor awards are the result of votes from millions of travellers and recognise the most memorable destinations around the world.

New Zealand featured in a number of categories. As well as Queenstown, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua and Milford Sound were all amongst the 'Top 25 Destinations in the South Pacific'.

Wellington took fifth place, and Auckland was sixth in the ‘Top 10 Nightlife Destinations in the South Pacific'.
