Auckland Airport wins marketing accolade
24 Sep 2010
Auckland Airport has picked up a significant global marketing award - at the prestigious World Routes Airport Marketing Awards, held in Canada this week.
The airport won the top honour for ‘best airport’ in the Asia region for international marketing. The World Routes awards rewards excellence in route development, and are nominated only by airlines. They are widely recognised as one of the airline industry’s most important accolades.
Auckland Airport business development manager Glenn Wedlock says the team is extremely proud to be recognised by the global airline industry.
"In winning this award, we also recognise the significant contribution made by the New Zealand tourism industry to help grow tourism, travel and trade markets," he said.
Auckland Airport was up against some stiff competition in the Asia category, including Singapore’s Changi Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Abu Dhabi Airports Company.
Forward thinking
Wedlock says that Auckland Airport’s achievements were made possible because of their forward thinking.
"Our significant investment in air services development is really starting to pay off, with announcements from airlines to introduce new international capacity to Auckland totalling in excess of 850,000 more seats per annum by late 2011."
Auckland Airport has invested heavily in route development over the years, building partnerships with key travel trade in growth areas to help build demand.
David Stroud, senior vice president of Routes Events and a member of the judging panel said the awards are highly regarded because of the calibre of its voters.
"What really sets these awards apart is how accurately they reflect the airlines’ views. Vitally, it is the airlines’ votes that create the shortlist from which the panel selects the winners, and the judging panel itself is made up of airline route development professionals."
Background: Auckland Airport
Auckland Airport is New Zealand’s largest airport and caters to about 13 million passengers each year.
The airport is located in Mangere, in South Auckland and is the home port of Air New Zealand, the country’s national airline. Auckland Airport is the second busiest international airport in the Australasia region, and greets 70% of New Zealand’s international visitors.
Auckland Airport has an interesting history. It was originally used as an airfield by the Auckland Aero Club in the 1920’s, before work started in 1960 to transform the land into Auckland’s main airport.
The first flight to take off from the brand-new terminal was an Air New Zealand DC-8 bound for Sydney. The airport is in the middle of an extensive ten-year expansion project, which will see a second runway completed before the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the eventual construction of a new domestic terminal at the northern end of the new runway.
