Diving the Poor Knights

It is perhaps the greatest compliment a dive site could receive - legendary oceanographer, the late Jacques Cousteau, named the Poor Knights islands as one of the world’s top 10 underwater wonderlands.

The clear waters around islands off Northland’s east coast, and the mixture of tropical and subtropical sea life, make it an environment unique on Earth.

A warm current swirls around the Poor Knights, making its way down from the Coral Sea north of Australia. Swimming in and out of underground caves, tunnels, archways and shipwrecks is a multitude of friendly colourful fish.

In summer, the water is a warm 20-23 degrees celcius and the water is clear to at least 20 metres.

Two former New Zealand naval ships - the HMNZS Tui and the HMNZS Waikato - have been sunk off the islands to give divers a further adventure.
