A generation of hikers: Old but not out

Pure Trails New Zealand has developed guided hiking trips of the South Island of New Zealand specifically for the older active traveller.

Founder Sue Weller says, 'This age group may be getting older, but that’s not to say they’re ready to put away the hiking boots just yet. It’s not uncommon to arrive at backcountry huts after a long hike to find a group of older hikers already relaxing on the deck.'

Older travellers still seek an active experience, but are also looking for ways to make the experience more enjoyable. 'By doing mainly day hikes, our clients don’t have to walk with the comfortable burden of a heavy pack', says Sue.

Transport, accommodation and meals are taken care of, and the tours even include a selected few adventure activities.

'With our huge network of hiking trails across the South Island, you see so many different landscapes on day hikes. In one day you can go from a rugged driftwood strewn west coast beach to native mountain beech forest to open alpine tussock', says Sue.

'For older hikers, it’s the perfect place for an active holiday.'
