Te Waimate mission station

Te Waimate Mission Station is a half an hour drive from Kerikeri. The second oldest building in New Zealand, Te Waimate is built in the Georgian style of architecture. Originally built to house the family of missionary George Clarke, it is the site of the earliest inland farm in New Zealand set up to instruct locals in farming techniques and to supply other missions with food. Many prominent people have visited Te Waimate - including Charles Darwin, who said it brought "England vividly before my mind". This was no accident, as Te Waimate was an early attempt to create an English style landscape in New Zealand and includes the oldest oak tree in the country.  Te Waimate Mission House is also the scene of the second signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
